What's a Stanely CAN? + why all bananas = evil.

Wednesday, June 10

Listening to "Into the Mystic," Van Morrison.

I... haven't been cooking.

...or really knitting.

or reading or cleaning or doing laundry or answering e-mails.

Instead, I ate a banana.

Well I didn't eat a whole one, but I ate some in a smoothie. By accident. But I'm allergic to bananas. Normally my lip just swells up or something and a benedryl will cure all/make me take a nap. But this time... my tongue swelled/cramped up.

I sounded like this guy.

Warren from There's Something about Mary--
love that movie :)

I'm fine :0) But I did have to go to the emergency room and get some not-so-fun shots and stuff, so today I'm tiiiiired.

I'm going to go to an allergist and make sure I'm not allergic to anything else :) And my parents have instructed that Matt is no longer to have any bananas in the apartment. Ever. lol. Poor guy.

Plus I've got some epi-pens now, which is nice. My mom's going to sew me a fun carrying case for one!

Anyone else got strange allergies or experiences with them? The human body is a crazy thing!

THE STANLEY CAN!

When my step-father Tom was in high school, he and his dorky friends set up a croquet tournament. It turned into an annual event so that every summer all the friends could get back together and hang out.

My Mom at last year's tournament, plotting
her next croquet move...

Whoever wins the croquet tournament gets to put their name on the coveted Stanley Can.

Jason, the 2007 Stanley Can winner,
passing the can to last year's
winner-- my Step-Dad Tom!

Also, the winner gets to be the host of the next Stanley Can tournament.

This year's tournament will be at my parent's house this Saturday! I have a couple friends coming into town (Leah, my best friend from college, and Allie, my best friend from... forever (3rd grade), who is bringing her baby Abby), plus lots of fun friends of my parents. Also, two of my favorite families to babysit for are coming!! It's going to be a great day :)

I plan to make:
-A hummus plate, complete with two kinds of hummus and veggies, pita chips and pita triangles for dipping. I plan to use Steph Chow's hummus recipe again! This will be my "covered dish" contribution to the Can.
-Cookies, maybe in the shape of a Stanley Can!
-Muffins, for my apartment guests (Leah and Allie) to enjoy in the morning! I guess Matt can have some, too...

So look forward to lots of Stanley Can pictures soon :) And reviews of the recipes I use!

~*~*~

For today, I'm going to take another nap, skip tutoring, take my medicine, try to catch up on blog reading, and knit. I need to be ready for the can, so rest is imperative. I've been telling Matt that I'm going to beat his croquet butt for months!!

EDIT
Forgot to mention, Tamela at A Brunette Making It One Day at a Time is having a fab contest; you could win Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred DVD! I really want it... but thought I would let you know, since so many of us are trying to look good in our bathing suits this summer :)

Also, Knitting Knoobie just announced her newest contest -- you could win some beautiful yarn. All you have to do to enter is tell a joke! How cute!

Can you tell I'm catching up on blog reading? Ha!

Well, I don't have a really odd allergy, I'm allergic to wheat (which is one of the major allergens). My baby brother is allergic to bananas, though!

I like bananas... but I could handle being allergic to them. Strawberries, on the other hand.... No freaking way!

LOVE the tradition of the Stanley Can! LOL! That is so cool. I'll be rooting for you, Sarah!

Glad you're okay, and definitely rest today, an allergic reaction is no joke for your body! It takes time to reboot. :)

Hope you kick everyone's can to win the can! Glad you're feeling better too. You need to get your knit on soon.

I've never heard of a food allergy to bananas! That stinks! I love bananas.

I noticed that when you posted about my banana chocolate muffins....You could probably still make them except use maybe...apples instead? Just dice up apples and add that. I think apples and chocolate go together too!

Oh bananas...one of us loves them, the other can't stand them. :) Sorry they got you all messed up. Rest up!

Sarah-- a wheat allergy? wow! I've heard of that; I know it requires a lot of special attention :) allergies are crazy!

Susie-- don't worry! My knitting bag is on my lap as we speak. I'm about to get some done on abby's jacket sleeve! :)

Jenn-- you are too sweet! I definitely see bananas a lot in baking; I've heard that apple sauce can be a good replacement for that! Your muffins sounded great, so I could definitely test that out :) I'll let you know how that works!

Duo Dishes-- haha that's how we are; Matt loves bananas! I think it's a funny fruit. Thanks :) I'm resting!

How fun! Stanley Can! Too bad I suck at croquet....

I hate bananas, so I wish you could just give me that allergy, I'd take it on for you, no problem. I in turn would like to trade you my animal dander allergy. Or my dust mite one. Or ragweed. Deal? :) Allergies SUCK!

I, too, am way behind on laundry, and I thought I was caught up on blog reading until I opened my Google reader....75 blogs to read! Egads!

Enjoy your upcoming festivities!

My son is allergic to watermelon. Did you hear me? WATERmelon. It's like 85% water! I don't get it but any juice from that or cantaloupes gets on his skin and he gets hives really bad.

My boyfriend is allergic to bananas too. They make his mouth break out in coldsores if he eats them. Which for him sucks since he loves banan pudding. Me, I nevered like bananas to begin with! Glad you are doing better!

The stanley can is pretty sweet looking!

Thats for the shout out about my giveaway!

Oh, and for the giveaway you want to post each thing in a different comment so you have four separate entries instead of one. That way if your number is picked on random.org you have a better chance.

I had to have iron infusions and ended up being allergic to a certain type of iron...yes iron. Weird huh?

Have fun with the croquet tourny!! Sounds like lots of fun!

FG-- Ughhh pet allergies are the worst. I have that one, but I'll trade you bananas for the other two? :) Good luck catching up on blog reading! I always feel behind. Good thing it's fun :)

Ace-- Haha watermelon and cantaloupe are two of mine as well!!! Crazy :) Those and avocado. Yea... weird. Poor guy! I don't get hives if I touch, just if I eat.

Tamela-- at least I'm not the only one :) I've never had banana pudding, which is probably a good thing since I've heard it tastes yummy!! And thanks for the contest heads-up, I'll definitely do that!!!

Mrs. C-- Oh no! You poor thing. I haven't heard of that one! And thanks, I am definitely looking forward to the croquet!

Oh no! Poor you! Glad to know it wasn't anything too too serious! I have an allergy to Kiwis. Not the ones from New Zealand, but the actual fruit. When I was little, eating one made my mouth taste like it was covered in hair. Then would vom 1,000 times. Now I'm not so bad, but I can always tell if something has kiwi in it because my mouth still gets the covered in hair sensation.

No allergies for me, but I HATE bananas!! My husband is always trying to sneak them into things like smoothies but I ALWAYS know they are there, ugh! I am so glad to hear you are okay and I'm sorry to hear you had to go through that ordeal - enjoy the rest! :)

I'm so glad you're okay, when I started reading your post, I was like "omg I hope she's alright"

I have a bit of a sun allergy (yes SUN) so when I'm in tropical or hot destinations my skin gets very itchy and then I break out in a rash. I've talked to my doctor and all he suggested was that I stay inside. Go figure!

sarah on June 10, 2009 at 7:45 PM said...

sometimes i read the comments on your blog and am confused by the number of sarahs... i`m like - did i already comment here?! i wish my name were more unique. but not something weird like apple or moses

all your parents and steps look so young!

are you okay?????????!?!?!?! allergies sound dangerous. i`m allergic to needles. i cry. but thats about it

Sounds like you are in for a fun time saturday. Hope you have a blast. Hummus sounds like the perfect contribution.

Didnt realize you were allergic to bananas. Hope youre feeling better!

Ah, bananas are overrated. People just like them because they're easy to eat. Just peel and bite! lol.
Stanley Can? Sounds fun! And if you do make cookies in the shape of stanley cans, PLEASe take a pic! :-)

And man o man, I am so hungry after reading your blog about making hummus plates....I just got my wisdoms out and reading ur blog is torture!! But I still love you! :)

Ella Everywhere-- Thanks girl :) I'm definitely fine now, just on this weird medicine that makes me sleep funny (hence the 5am blog commenting...)! An allergy to sun? Wow! There has to be something you can do besides stay inside!! My best friend's Mom would get what she called a "sun rash" but only if she was in the sun for a loooong time. Be careful!

Sarah-- I KNOW! That happens to me on other blogs all the time. Sometimes I have to click and make sure it's not me... My parents and steps are pretty young :) But cool! And I'm definitely okay, but going to be much more careful from now on!

Sebastian-- You're obviously just jealous that you can't come. I understand. :)

Kym-- haha now I'm really curious what your other allergy is! Dust can definitely be a serious one; be careful exploring attics or basements or any other dusty places, you might get really sick! Dust just makes me sneeze and my eyes get really watery, like I'm watching a sad movie and turning on the water-works or something!

Donna-FFW-- I think this is the first party I've ever contributed something besides the chips or the drinks haha! But I am super excited. And thanks, I'm definitely feeling better now :)

Burpandslurp-- haha thanks, all these other people have been like "You're allergic to BANANAS? That sucks, they're so good!!" and I'm like "...thanks?" :) And don't worry, I'll definitely take pictures!!!!

Ron-- hummus sounds like the perfect thing for someone who's lost their wisdom teeth!! Hit up a friend to get you some of that! Although, after mine were out I just pigged out on icecream and ramen for like 3 days lol. Sorry for the torture :)

The only thing I'm allergic to is iodine. Never knew that until I went for an X-ray with that dye about ten years ago, and promptly broke out into big red welts. Good thing I don't like and never ate seafood!

A friend of ours was bitten by a spider or ant at a bike race last weekend, and broke out into huge hives despite benadryl. He is now carrying an epipen, as is Chris (my husband) who is allergic to bees.

The human body is definitely strange!

Aw, the Stanley Can tradition is awesome! Maybe you'll win it this year! :) I'm so sorry to hear about your allergic reaction to the banana! I hope that you are feeling better!! I'm in the process of doing some blog reading, too - I'm way behind after coming to PA!

The Stanley Can sounds like a lot of fun.

And, I'm allergic to carrots. Just as weird as someone being allergic to bananas, in my opinion haha!

That's weird, I wonder if there's a connection between the melons and bananas?? My son hasn't had a banana in a while, but I wonder if he'll be allergic to those too now.

That looks like a fun family tradition! I like those tournaments, we have a similar one in my family, but it's much nerdier... it's silly dancing! Too embarrassing to elaborate!

Banana emergencies are a slippery slope!

Your croquet event is hysterical. You must with the can/cup.

Im going to enter the yarn contest! thanks for the tip

Fruit allergies SUCK! I am allergic to most fruit- pretty much everything except for bananas, melons, and grapes. I hate it cause I love fresh strawberries and peaches more than anything. It is a great excuse to take a benadryl induced nap though.. I also found out when I was about 20 that I am allergic to tree nuts. The body works in such strange ways!

Can we set up an anti-banana club? I hate bananas, hate with the power of a thousand suns, and yet they are everywhere: muffins, breads, smoothies. Banana bread at least I can avoid. I ordered a raspberry muffin the other day, bit into it, and BANANA. It was a banana bomb.
